Design and Technology KS3

Intent


At Barnwell, students are taught to develop their creativity and ideas and increase proficiency in their development. We encourage them to develop a critical understanding of artists, architects, and designers, expressing reasoned judgements that can inform their own work. We aim for students to develop a range of technical skills and knowledge which they are then able to use in the development and manufacture of products throughout KS3,4 and 5.

Within our Design and Technology Key Stage 3 curriculum we embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality Design and Technology education should engage, inspire, and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own designs and products.

The national curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all students are equipped to communicate design, making, evaluation skills and application of technical knowledge  through experiencing a rich curriculum rotation. Within the rotations students are introduced to:

  The Eatwell Guide and Basic Practical Skills Pop-Up Books

Ugly Monsters Project

Pupils will design and make their own soft toy, Ugly Monster. This will be a hand-crafted project, where they will have the opportunity to learn how to hand sew and each will individually design their own Monster.

 
  • 'The Eatwell Guide' and contemporary healthy eating advice.
  • Hazard Analysis: safe food storage, cleaning, and preventing accidents.
  • Basic knife skills, use of the hob and oven to prepare a range of fruits, vegetables, protein, carbohydrate and dairy foods. 
  • Preparation techniques and skills: baking, boiling, simmering, rubbing-in and all-in-one methods.

 Batik Photo Frames

Pupils will design and make a hand dyed fabric photo frame based on Geometric patterns. They will learn how to complete the Batik fabric dying process and will hand dye their fabric individually.
