Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is an integral part of all students’ entitlement and learning at Barnwell. Effective careers support will help to prepare young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life; it can help them to make decisions and manage transitions as learners and workers. As options for young people become more varied and complex, it is vital that we support them to develop the knowledge and skills they need to make informed choices for their future. As a result, innovative employer engagement is a whole-school priority designed to complement the rest of the school curriculum.

Barnwell School is using the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve its careers provision.
There are 8 Gatsby Benchmarks and these are:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking the curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
The school’s Careers Leader is Mr Martyn Patching (Assistant Headteacher).

Barnwell Pride lessons focus on supporting students to make decisions about their options that will enhance their career opportunities.

Barnwell uses its school management information system, SIMS to keep a log of all the careers and enterprise activities that students take part in.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Our Careers programme is evaluated in several ways. Barnwell is a member of the Careers Enterprise Company and three times per year we complete the ‘Compass’ Careers Benchmark Tool.
• ‘Compass’ is a tool for schools and colleges in England, that quickly and easily helps us to evaluate our careers activity against the eight benchmarks of best practice – known as the Gatsby Benchmarks:
1. A stable careers programme.
2. Learning from career and labour market information.
3. Addressing the needs of each pupil.
4. Linking curriculum learning to careers.
5. Encounters with employers and employees.
6. Experiences of workplaces.
7. Encounters with further and higher education.
8. Personal guidance.

• We ask for student feedback on their experience of the careers programme and what they gained from it
• We collect staff feedback on careers lessons, activities and events
• We gather informal feedback from external partners and from parents
• We quality assure our careers provision in regular meeting with the Careers Enterprise Company
• We monitor student destination figures post-16 and post-18.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Review
This policy will be monitored and reviewed on an annual basis by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
