Careers Programme

Barnwell School is using the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve its careers provision.

 

There are 8 Gatsby Benchmarks and these are:

Work Shadowing

Students can shadow a member of their family at work for a day.

Years 8 and 10.

Understanding the labour market

A video clip that paints a picture of Hertfordshire’s labour market detailing the types of industry and common enterprises within the county.

Years 9 -13

Sixth Form work experience

A 2-week placement in the summer term. 

Year 12

Career Talks

Volunteers come in on a regular basis to deliver a lunchtime talk on specific careers.

Years 10 to 13

Visiting Speakers

A discussion about what it is like at work and what it takes to be successful in the workplace. 

KS4

Career Pathways

An assembly covering the different pathways available to students post-16 including apprenticeships (all levels), college, sixth form and university.

Years 8 to 11.

Destinations

The school collates information about the destinations of students at the end of year 11 and year 13.

Years 11 and 13

STEM subjects

A talk about how the different STEM subjects help people to gain entry to, and be more effective workers within a wide range of careers.

Years 8 and 9.

University visits

Opportunities to meet university staff and students.

Years 9, 10, 12 and 13

Careers interview

One to one impartial careers advice and a guidance meeting with an advisor from YC Herts.

Year 11

Careers Fair

Students talk to a range of employers using a carousel format.

Years 10 and 11.

Weekly Bulletin

 

Weekly information on university open days, apprenticeship opportunities, college and sixth form open days and employment and training opportunities.

A range of employers will talk to students in their curriculum areas about specific careers relevant to their subject area.

Year 12 and 13.

Apprenticeship Event

Students can learn about the range of apprenticeships available.

Year 10.

Subject specific work experience

This forms part of specific GCSE subjects and forms part of the school’s alternative provision programme for targeted students.

Years 10 and 11.

Student shadowing

Students have opportunities to shadow university students at the University of Hertfordshire.

Year 12

Promotion of career learning and development.

Barnwell Pride lessons focus on supporting students to make decisions about their options that will enhance their career opportunities.

Years 7-11.

 

Barnwell uses its school management information system, SIMS to keep a log of all the careers and enterprise activities that students take part in.
