Sociology is the study of how society is organised and how we experience life. Sociology enables us to understand the structure of society, and connections and patterns in human behaviour.
The course is designed to give students the opportunity to focus on their own experience of the social world, whilst encouraging them to build on this knowledge by analysing and reflecting on different aspects of society.
Sociology is a very popular choice at A Level, and the GCSE course provides an excellent stepping stone on to further study in Sociology and other social science subjects.
People who study Sociology go on into a wide variety of jobs such as community and social work, journalism, police, probationary and prison officers and human resources.
The course is assessed on three examinations held at the end of Year 11. The assessments use both short answer comprehension questions and extended essay questions; therefore a good grasp of English is strongly recommended.
Unit 1: Sociology basics
(Written examination 25% 1 hour)
