The Head Student Team at Barnwell School play a vital role in the life of the school. They represent the students of the school to teachers, parents, governors and members of our community. They are required to speak to large and small groups of parents, students and teachers and to chair a range of meetings. They coordinate the Sixth Form Committee and the various sub-committees and need to bring all the information together to continually improve the life of sixth formers and the school community as a whole.
This year's Head Students are Inayah Shah and James Mays:
My name is Inayah Shah, and I am thrilled to be the new Head Girl at Barnwell. I am currently in year 12 studying English Language and Literature, Media Studies and History. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, socialising with friends and going to the cinema and live music events. I was appointed as Head Girl in year 9 for Hoy College, and I am excited to be able to continue with the position higher up the school.
Our interview process was rigorous and intense, but I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to develop my experience within that setting. In order to prepare for my application and interview, I read through the school’s Ofsted report and highlighted areas which I believe, I could lead and improve.
My future plans for my role include; Peer mentoring and coaching from 6th form students to both KS4 and KS3, integrating the year groups within the 6th form by holding academic and social events, attending governor and SLT meetings to obtain cohesion between all stages of leadership within the school and finally being a positive and approachable role model to my fellow Barnwell students.
Beyond Barnwell, I aspire to go to university to study English. Currently I would like to use this to progress in to the media or journalism industries.
I am excited for my future achievements and collaborations with fellow students and staff at Barnwell, and particularly our robust 6th form leadership team.
My name is James Mays. As an individual, I like to think of myself as ambitious and hard-working, but I have always made it my priority to put others first. I have always had a strong passion for drama, performing at the Gordon Craig and at school. I always do my best to push myself as far as I can in any field, always trying to improve whatever it is I desire or am required to do.
For me the interview process was certainly nerve-racking, however I was determined and prepared. I had sought advice from various teachers, friends, family about how to conduct myself in the interview. The best advice I received was to take my time to think about the question before answering, to give a clear and concise response rather than a more reactionary one. I was interviewed on the upper campus by Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Roberts and Ms Townsend simultaneously. Each asked me questions, in turn, seeking to understand what I would bring to the role and who I was as an individual. Finally, I was able to ask my own question about anything regarding my potential role as Head Boy. I chose to ask whether my role would allow the development of community links, with more opportunities for trips and to ensure the Barnwell community has a positive effect upon the wider community.
Aside from the obvious, I would like to use my role as Head Boy as well as the support of the rest of the Student Leadership Team to create a more enjoyable environment for everyone. A teacher perfectly summarised my intentions to make it more fun. I do however understand I am limited by the length of the year ahead of me. As such, I hope to revitalise programmes such as the Ambassador Programme or even this very Leadership Team so we can all work toward a common goal of pushing the boundaries of Barnwell into new possibilities.
So far I have kept my options open, my mother always encourages me to do what I love and that’s advice I have adopted within my own education and aspirations. I adore, as previously mentioned, drama but linguistic subjects like English, History or Philosophy have always captured my mind and imagination. As such, the role of a writer would fulfil my interests would, certainly, be a path that would make me feel satisfied.
I am honoured to be Head Boy of Barnwell School and realise the potential of this opportunity to further the school and contribute towards an improved student life. However, I cannot do this alone. I am merely the voice of which your thoughts can be amplified and, thus, just another part of the student body I intend to represent to my full ability.
All Sixth Form Committee members are expected to set a good example of work ethic, behaviour, represent the student body at events and speak in assemblies but they also have specific job roles which are described below. Most committee heads will set up and run their own committee to assist them.
|Head Students:||Chair and assist Sixth Form Committee: Liaise with the Headteacher and Head of Sixth.|
|Treasurer:||Hold the Sixth Form accounts and ensure their accuracy: Pay for goods and services required by Sixth Form Ball and Events Committees: Collect and deposit money raised by events. Liaise with Finance Office.|
|Head of Sport and Deputy Head of Sport:||Promote the participation of Sport in the Sixth Form: Organise events and liaise with staff.|
|Head of Charity and Deputy Head of Charity||Decide on which charity the Sixth Form is to support: Organise events and liaise with staff.|
|Head of Events and Deputy Head of Events:||Help to organise Induction week, arrange events e.g. Christmas Party, Quiz nights, debates, fund raising events etc.|
|Head of Media:||Produce posters, tickets and other promotional material to publicise events. Publish Sixth Form newsletter, improve website and make promotional films: investigate school radio: secretarial duties for the Sixth Form Committee including agenda and minutes. Liaise with Head of Sixth Form and staff. Write, compile and edit the Sixth Form Newsletter. Secretarial duties for the Sixth Form Governing Body including agendas and minutes as required.|
|Head of Environment:||Design and develop a programme to improve our environment.|
|Head of Ball Committee and Deputy Head of Ball Committee:||Organise the Sixth Form Summer Ball.|
|Head of Teaching and Learning and Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning:||Liaise with students, Head of Sixth Form and staff on all aspects of teaching and learning.|
|Student Governor:||To represent the student body at Governors meetings.|
|Student Voice||To represent the student body. To liaise with Head of Sixth, Headteacher and staff.|
|Head of Expressive Arts||To represent the Expressive Arts faculty as an ambassador; promoting its work and supporting younger students.|
