Sustainability

Sustainability at Barnwell School

At Barnwell School, we are committed to creating a more sustainable future for our students, staff and wider community. Through our Climate Change and Sustainability Action Plan, we aim to reduce our environmental impact while equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to become responsible for global citizens.

Our approach focuses on improving energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy, reducing waste, encouraging sustainable travel, enhancing biodiversity and ensuring environmental considerations are embedded within our decision-making and procurement processes. We are continually exploring ways to reduce our carbon footprint and make our school operations more environmentally responsible.

Sustainability is already embedded within our science curriculum, and we are working to extend environmental education across all subject areas so that students develop a deeper understanding of climate change and sustainable living. We are also committed to providing opportunities for students to take an active role in shaping the school's sustainability journey.

From September 2027, we will re-establish our Eco School Programme and work towards achieving Eco Schools accreditation. Student voice will play a key role through surveys, environmental initiatives, sustainability-focused form activities and practical projects such as our Garden Club, which will help promote biodiversity, outdoor learning and environmental stewardship.

By working together, we aim to create a school environment where sustainability is not only taught but lived, empowering our students to make a positive difference for future generations.
