SMSC and British Values

At Barnwell School, we meet our statutory duty to promote pupils' Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development through a broad and balanced curriculum, our personal development programme and daily school life. In doing so, we actively promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.

SMSC prepares students for life in modern Britain by developing their character, values, relationships and understanding of the world around them.

Spiritual: Developing self-awareness, curiosity, reflection, resilience and respect for different beliefs and values.
Moral: Understanding right and wrong, respecting the law, taking responsibility and considering different ethical viewpoints.
Social: Building positive relationships, contributing to the community, working collaboratively and demonstrating British Values in action.
Cultural: Appreciating diversity, understanding different cultures and traditions, and engaging with artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities.

SMSC is embedded across all aspects of school life through:
