Barnwell Teachers Have Written A Book
It is a real pleasure to write about the latest project undertaken by teachers at Barnwell School.
The title of the book is:
Multiple Learning Activities
Providing for Different Learning Preferences
At Barnwell we have been focusing on Howard Gardner’s work on multiple intelligences and this has underpinned a collaborative project between Barnwell School and the University of Cambridge. As an example, all students in the school have completed a profiling questionnaire that helps to identify their most preferred way of learning. If you have a child in the school you will find a sticker their planner that indicates this preference. It is colour coded and will highlight one of the following learning preferences:
Learning Preference: Visual / Spacial learner
Likes to: See information, draw, build, design
How you are smart: Eye Smart
Learning Preference: Kinaesthetic Learner
Likes to: Do, touch, move around
How you are smart: Body Smart
Learning Preference: Interpersonal learner
Likes to: Join groups, talk to people, work in teams
How you are smart: People Smart
Learning Preference: Intrapersonal learner
Likes to: Reflect on their own, pursue own interest, push self hard
How you are smart: Self Smart
Learning Preference: Logical / Mathematical learner
Likes to: Predict outcomes, do experiments, puzzles
How you are smart: Number Smart
Learning Preference: Music / Rhythmical learner
Likes to: Sing, hum, respond to music
How you are smart: Sound Smart
Learning Preference: Linguistic learner
Likes to: Write, read, orally present
How you are smart: Word Smart
Dr. David Frost from the University of Cambridge has provided the preface to the book and sixteen teachers from Barnwell have written eighty classroom based activities aimed at meeting the individual needs of students. The book has been warmly received by other schools in Hertfordshire, from as far away as Brighton in the south to Gateshead in the north and many places in between and we have even had a great deal of praise from around the globe from teachers in the USA, Austria, Greece, Denmark, Sweden and Australia. As one Educational Consultant wrote
“This book is full of time saving and highly effective ways to engage pupils in their learning. As practical as it is invaluable, it provides a wide range of activities, both generic and subject specific, ready fro use in the classroom.
“I have seen these ideas in practice at Barnwell and they work!”
