Curriculum Map

The Dance curriculum at Barnwell is designed to develop students' creativity, self-confidence, artistic appreciation, cultural understanding, social skills, teamwork, communication¬†and self-awareness. ‚ÄĮStudents experience a broad range of dance styles from Bollywood to Capoeira to Contemporary and other popular dance styles.¬†

Students are taught both how to appreciate and analyse professional Dance works and how to critique their own and others' performances and compositions to enable a continuous process of self-development. Students' self-confidence and empathy is refined through regular opportunities to choreograph their own compositions and perform to their peers.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities
There are also many opportunities for students to participate in dance activities beyond the curriculum whether or not they choose to take dance as an examination subject at Key Stage 4 and 5. These include performing at local festivals and events, Rock Challenge and the many school productions that take place every year.
To enhance students‚Äô appreciation of dance they are also invited to attend theatre trips and shows throughout the year as well as events such as ‚ÄėMove It Dance Convention‚Äô at London¬†ExCel¬†Centre.¬†

Students who show a keen interest and talent for dance at Key Stage 3 are invited to join one of our school dance companies. In Year 8 students can become a member of ‚ÄėElevate Dance Company‚Äô and in Year 9 ‚ÄėAccelerate Dance Company‚Äô. These extra-curricular activities are a fun and exciting way for students to begin to prepare for the GCSE course and participate in more complex and challenging choreography and performance content.¬†

GCSE Dance
At GCSE level the Dance course is a fun and challenging way to develop performance, choreography and analytical skills and continues to build on the skills students have acquired during their Key Stage 3 Dance lessons.
Students participate in regular technique exercises to develop and enhance their technical ability and then put these skills into practice both during informal sharing’s in class and performances in school productions and shows. Students are assessed on their practical Dance skill which is worth 60% of their final grade. It includes two short solo performances and a duet or trio performance piece. Students also explore the process of choreography by creating a solo or group dance. The theory component makes up 40% of the exam and includes the study of six professional dance works in detail as well as hypothetical choreography tasks and performance skill explanation. This is assessed in a written exam where students are asked to demonstrate their interpretation of the lighting, costumes, set design and choreography.

A-Level Dance
A Level Dance is a challenging and engaging course and ideal for students who have achieved a 5 or above at GCSE. The practical component comprises 50% of the final exam and further develops students’ performance and choreographic skills through a solo performance, performance in a quartet and a group choreography. The choreography is in response to an external task set by the examining board in the second year of study.

The theory component makes up 50% of the overall grade and requires students to study two areas in detail. The first being Rambert Dance Company 1966 - 2002 and the professional work ‚ÄėRooster‚Äô by Christopher Bruce, plus¬†a number of¬†choreographers associated with Rambert during that time period. The second study area looks at the Independent Contemporary Dance Scene in Britain from 2000 onwards and the professional work ‚ÄėSutra‚Äô by Sidi Larbi¬†Cherkaoui¬†as well as¬†a number of¬†professional works from other British Contemporary choreographers in this time period. Students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding in a 2 ¬Ĺ hour written exam at the end of Year 13.¬†
