GCSE Business Studies
Key Stage 4
Edexcel GCSE Business Studies (2009)
GCSE Business Studies will enable students to actively engage and develop as effective and independent students. This course gives students the opportunity to become critical and reflective thinkers and to build arguments and make informed judgments.
Year 10
Unit 1: Introduction to Small Business (external examination, 25% of the course)
This unit has five areas of study:
- Spotting a business opportunity
- Showing enterprise
- Putting a business idea into practice
- Making the start-up effective
- Understanding the economic context
Unit 2: Controlled Assessment (25% of the course)
This unit of work is based on the theory learnt during Unit 1. Students have to choose a question, from a range set by Edexcel, and then research, analyze and apply findings to answer the question posed.
Year 11
Unit 3: Building a Business (external examination, 50% of the course)
This unit also has five areas of study:
- Marketing
- Meeting customers needs
- Effective financial management
- Effective people management
- The wider world affecting business
Completion of this course would award students with 1 GCSE.
BTEC Extended Certificate in Business
This course is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s and is delivered in Year 12 as a one year program of study.
The program of study consists of three mandatory and two optional units of work:
Mandatory units
Unit 1: Business Purposes
Unit 2: Business Organizations
Unit 3: Financial Forecasting for Business
Optional units
Unit 4: People in Organizations
Unit 11: Customer Relations in Business
Key Stage 5
BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Business
This is a two year course and is broadly equivalent to 1 GCE A Level.
The program of study consists of four mandatory and two optional units of work:
Mandatory units
Unit 1: The Business Environment
Unit 2: Business Resources
Unit 3: Introduction to Marketing
Unit 4: Business Communication
Optional units
Unit : Another optional unit to be confirmed
Unit 11: Development Planning for a Career in Business
