Garrett House
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was the first female Doctor in Great Britain. She became a doctor in a time when women were not allowed to train in Great Britain so she became a nurse, taught herself French and went to Paris to train.
Anderson's determination paved the way for other women, and in 1876 an act was passed permitting women to enter the medical professions.
Head of House—Mrs Jenkins: “Her ambition and determination to succeed is reflected within our house as we all work together to gain our hopes and dreams.”
Brunel House
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a famous Victorian engineer who is best known for the creation of the Great Western Railway , a series of famous steamships, including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship, and numerous important bridges and tunnels. He was very dedicated and worked hard to achieve his goals.
“Our house motto ‘Building Bridges’ relates to Brunel’s career as well as the part Barnwell School will play in developing you as a person.” - Head of House
Franklin House
More than half a century ago, international scientists raced to find the secret of life. At the forefront of this research was a brilliant British scientist, Rosalind Franklin, who brought her substantial gifts to the study of DNA.
“Franklin was a determined and highly motivated student who experienced many barriers to her achievement. Students in Franklin House need to share this philosophy to reach their full potential. Students will need to work hard, exploit their opportunities and remain focused until the end.” Miss Moore—Head of House.
Caxton House
William Caxton lived in the 15th century. He was the first Englishman to work as a printer and introduced the printing press to this country. As a result knowledge could be accessed more easily through books and other written material.
