Every student in the school is a member of the Student Council. It is the way students have their say in how Barnwell School works i.e. it is the 'Student Voice'.

Each form group, at the start of the academic year in September, elects two representatives to the House Council. One student from the upper school (Year 10 or 11) and one student from the Lower School (Year 7,8 or 9). There are therefore currently 14 students on each House Council on West Campus and 10 atudents on each House Council on East Campus. A House Council Link Teacher (HCLT) either the Head of House or Assistant Head of House, facilitates the House Council.

Each House Council then elects 2 representatives onto the School Council,One student from the upper school (Year 10 or 11) and one student from the Lower School (Year 7,8 or 9). There are therefore 10 students on the School Council on West Campus and 8 students on the School Council on East Campus. The Head of the Achievement Support Department facilitates and trains the School Council on West Campus and the Lead Teacher of Citizenship facilitates and trains the School Council on East Campus.

Each School Council elects a Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary this is the executive Committee for each Campus. These students are also Associate Governors on the School's Governing Body and attend Full Governing Body Meetings.

The School Council is at the centre of decision-making and directly consults with the Head teacher, governors, the wider school community and Staff meetings.
