Life in the Sixth Form
"The progress made by students in the rapidly growing sixth form...was well above average overall and amongst the highest in the county." Ofsted Feb 2009
As a member of the Barnwell School Sixth Form students are able to make full use of the facilities available, these include the Common Room with its own café and Sky Television, Study Room and facilities in the Learning Resource Area.
In addition, Sixth Formers benefit from a supportive guidance programme with teachers identified as their personal learning mentors enabling students to succeed in their studies. Mrs Johnson is our Head of Post 16 Studies and she is supported by a Post 16 Administrator and an Administration Assistant. Mrs Johnson is your first point of contact for all things Post 16.
Many of our students go to University each year and a full support programme is offered as part of our Guidance entitlement.
Barnwell’s Sixth Form is a thriving community. Year 12 and 13 students share excellent facilities. The Sixth Form has nearly 250 students studying a wide range of courses including A levels, BTEC,GNVQ and Specialist Diploma qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3. An enrichment programme including social and sporting activities are run over the course of the year and there are a large number of social events many of which are organised by Sixth Formers.
Borneo 2011 by Jordan Watson
Many of our students have recently returned from a month long trip to the incredibly idyllic island of Borneo. And what a month it was! Our adventures travelled all the way to the south-east Asian island to take part in an experience of a life time.
Not only did the group spend five days living like the people of Batu Puteh in the jungle, but they put their efforts towards helping the communities of Borneo too. They helped build a kindergarten on Mantanani Island, and a community centre, not to mention digging a water chamber to provide fresh water to the village of Bongkud.
Chloe Hazelwood, who took part in the once-in-a-lifetime trip said:
‘The trip to Borneo was AMAZING! I learnt so much about myself on the trip and how different things are in different cultures, and how this affects different people. Saying this, the trip wouldn’t have been half as good if it wasn’t for the people we went with. The leaders were amazing, especially our trip leader Martin who was fantastic; making the length of the trip not so daunting! It truly was a once in a life time experience! It was incredible and I would recommend such a trip to anybody who is thinking about doing something like this.’
Sixth Form Barbecue - 15th July 2011
Two wise men once said: ‘fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone’ and this was certainly the case at the Sixth Form led barbecue on 15th July. The sun gave a welcomed appearance on the last Friday of term as the BBQ kicked off with the sounds of Wham’s Club Tropicana humming through the common room.
Thanks to the efforts of the events team, the BBQ began with an honestly better-than-expected turnout; current and future Sixth Formers alike congregated in the sunny courtyard besides the common room. Nick Flood took the masculine role of manning the barbecue; and all the better for it, he was knocking out burgers quicker than SpongeBob in the Krusty Krab.
I think it’s fair to say we were all very thankful of his culinary efforts, not to mention the help of a number of other individuals. Just another event to build the Sixth Form community and our Head Girl agrees:
‘As Head Girl I truly believe that the BBQ was a complete success. I would like to personally thank everyone that went and helped out; it was a real group effort! Everyone that helped clear up the mess, put the chairs out and most importantly cook the burgers. I do hope that even when we are all gone, the summer BBQ will live on as it was such a good occasion and a brilliant excuse to tuck into some BBQ food. The weather was lovely for the whole day and that meant we could all relax and soak in the sun! Most of all I think it was a great day for the fresh year 12's to chat to year 13's and it made the transition into sixth form much smoother. Once again thank you to everyone for making the day a huge success, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves! - May we have many more days like that to come.’
Frankie’s words say it all, well done to everyone that organised, helped and aided in making the BBQ the great success it was.
