Extended Learning

One of the aims we have at Barnwell is to focus on raising achievement for all students. In order to do this we aim to develop the tasks which students complete at home, by helping them to acquire and develop research and thinking skills, by independent study.

You will already be accustomed to your child having homework at junior school. At Barnwell, in line with the school's focus on learning and achievement, it is called the Extended Learning Programme. The emphasis is placed on setting your child tasks which will be manageable, yet challenging, with a desire to promote the skills of independent thinking, whilst developing research and study skills.

We see this as another opportunity to forge strong home-school partnerships, giving you the opportunity to take an active part in your child's education. Work completed for extended learning is a key to success and all students are issued with planners which are used not only to record work which has been set, but enable them to plan their work and set themselves targets.

A comprehensive timetable for extended learning is set at the beginning of the year, and students write this into their planners. All work to be completed for extended learning should be recorded in the planner and its completion is a vital ingredient for success.

Parents are asked to check their child's planner to see that work is being recorded and completed. Resources are available for use in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) every afternoon after school and pupils have the opportunity to work in the LRC at lunchtime, where help is available.

Marking of work by staff plays an important part in ensuring that each pupil is making progress and the school has a unified marking policy across all subject areas, to enable both pupils and parents to understand the system used. The marking of work ensures that effective dialogue between teacher / pupil, and pupil / parent is enhanced.
