Barnwell Score a Double!

Friday, 26th March 2010

After losing in the semi’s twice in year 7 and 8 and being runners up in year 9, the Barnwell Year 10 school football team finally won their first trophy last night.

The final which was held at Barclay school at Meridian was a tough and gritty game on a not so good pitch. Barnwell started quickly and after a couple of minutes Charley Rogers found space behind the Meridian and slotted past the keeper.

The game was very close and Robert Longman was able to finish after great build up by Conor Byrne. At half time both captain Jack Taylor and forward Charley Rogers had to leave so Barnwell had a shakeup in formation.

In the first minute Stuart Thomas was able to hold of a defender and volleyed the ball home from 20 yards out with a fantastic goal.. As the game was nearing its end Robert managed to cross the ball in and there was a mix up in defence, with Lewis Croucher scoring.

Both George Mitchell and Kieran Mitham had great chances to score, with George’s chance cleared of the line and Kieran’s hitting the post from a long range shot. But as the final whistle went the players, subs and supporters celebrating and Kieran, as vice-captain lifting the trophy above his head, finally Barnwell’s Year 10 team had won a trophy.
