MBDA Glider Challenge
Monday, 11th July 2011
It was my very great pleasure to take a team of 4 students to MBDA on Friday 8th July. Olivia white, Rickie Smith, Nicola Williams and Alex Thomas to take part in the first ever glider challenge.
The day started with a tour of the MBDA giving the students the chance to see some of the testing equipment and ask as many questions as they could think of.
They then moved to the challenge, they were joined by a mentor from MBDA and attended four 8 minute lessons on building a glider, these included, how a glider flies, materials available, airstreams and wing size and shape.
The rest of the day was given over to producing a glider our team quickly started to work together by each drawing up a prototype of a glider; they shared these ideas with each other and took the best from each design to make one very impressive glider.
During the course of the day they also had to complete a log book, put together a presentation and come in on budget with the materials they needed to purchase to make their glider.
At 3.00 it was time to present to the judges and our team did such an impressive job they came away with a trophy for best team work and presentation for the day. At 3.30 the flight trials took place and their glider went over 12 meters unfortunately this was the 2nd furthers however the students had a really good day and should be very proud of the way they represented the school.
