Fair Trade fortnight 28th February – 13th March

Barnwell School launched Fair Trade fortnight with a special Year 7 assembly.

The students were treated to a presentation by John Kabyetsiza who is a Ugandan Fairtrade producer. He represents workers who grow pineapples and bananas that are made into dried fruits.  These Fairtrade dried fruits are put into products such as tropical fruit and snack bars made by Tropical Whole Foods which can be found on the shelves of independent shops and supermarkets across the UK.

There was also a presentation by students:  Zach Harrop, Stefan Harrop, James Shaw, Jared Gregory, Karl Newton, Rhys Gayh, Chloe Richardson and Sophie Chung who spoke about Fairtrade in school, what it is, how to recognise Fairtrade products, why we should purchase them if possible and how they have started to promote Fairtrade around school with a sale of Fairtrade products on the last Friday of the month.

This was followed with a world record attempt.  Jasmin and Rosie from Stevenage Fairtrade group supported the whole of our Year 7 to produce Fair Trade bunting in a country wide attempt to make a piece of bunting that will eventually be in excess of 40 miles long.

Each student was given a Fairtrade Cotton triangle to decorate this will be added to the Barnwell School section of the bunting.

Also supporting this assembly was Sharon Taylor  - chair woman of Hertfordshire fair trade group and The Mayor of Stevenage, Mr Michael Downing.

On Tuesday the students were invited to repeat their presentation at an event at County Hall.  This was attended by the Mayors of all the towns in Hertfordshire and and although the students were very nervous they did their presentation in a very professional way and were commended by many of the audience.

To round up Fair Trade fortnight we will hold an extra Fairtrade Friday sale on 11th March and are also looking at apply to become a Fairtrade School.
