Easter Multi-sports Club Round-up

Easter Multisports Club.

This Easter Barnwell School organised and ran a three day Multisports activity club for Years 7 and 8 with an emphasis on SEAL.  SEAL is the social and emotional aspects of learning and incorporates five themes: self awareness, empathy, social skills, managing feelings and motivation – all of which were covered in the Easter club.

Using the SEAL themes our aim was to invite students from year 7 and 8 who enjoy PE.  With this in mind it was our intention to make students aware of SEAL and how it affects their every day life whilst attending school.  We organised various sporting activities, both individual and team sports that are part of the curriculum, such as Badminton, Tennis, Football, Rugby and Athletics.

It was an important factor to organise both team sports and individual games, as this makes participants more aware of empathy towards others whilst working in a sporting environment.  During team games participants were encouraged to communicate positively towards their team mates, at the same time showing encouragement towards their opponent.  For example, this could be someone missing a shot and an opponent encouraging them to keep trying and not to be scared of shooting the next time they have an opportunity to do so.  This is just one example of empathy, as it shows that one person understands another’s feelings for the situation they are presented with.  This also demonstrates emotional intelligence and good social behavioural skills.

During the three days the student’s abilities were tested throughout a range of different games and sports.  From this we discovered that some student’s ability was better than first thought.  For instance, Wesley Chan is a very good badminton player and plays a lot outside of school; he is now being encouraged to play more often and for the school when we start badminton again in September.  Students were given plenty of time and encouragement to find new skills within their chosen sport, time to practise and then support to put these skills to use in match situations.

Overall the SEAL intentions were all highlighted throughout the three days to the students both individually and as a group.  On top of this the participants were offered and received a vast range of sporting activities to take part in, they were given the freedom to enhance and practice the skills that they had learnt.  An enjoyable time was had by all the staff and students who took part.
