Physical Education is compulsory in Years 7-11 and is taught through 2 x 1hour lessons per week

All students are required to wear the following kit when participating in lessons:

  • Red 'Barnwell' Polo shirt or 'Barnwell' Rugby shirt
  • Plain black shorts or Plain black jogging bottoms
  • Red football socks
  • Trainers

Barnwell School has received the Sportsmark Gold / Activemark and the  Charter Standard Development School Award for outstanding contribution to Football.

Key Stage 4

GCSE Physical Education and BTEC First Certificate in Sport are offered as examination courses whilst BTEC First certificate in Dance is offered to all students as part of our 'options' system. The following accredited are also offered to all students during Years 10 and 11 during their compulsory PE lessons:- Junior Sports Leaders Award, (Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership). Junior Football Organisers Award, Dance Leaders Award and the Young Netball Organisers Award. Pupils are also given the opportunity to use the excellent facilities in the gym at Shephall Leisure Centre.

Key Stage 5

The BTEC National Award, Certificate, Diploma and 'A' level Physical are accredited options available to Sixth Form students. We also offer the Community Sports Leaders Award (Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership), the NCFE Level 1 Award in Exercise Studies and a weekly recreation session.

All P.E. staff are fully qualified teachers and we also have outside coaches for table-tennis, judo and archery that work alongside Barnwell staff. The school has links with local table-tennis, archery, girls football, rugby, basketball and judo clubs.

Teams represent Barnwell in a range of sports in both district / county and national competitions.

Annual events include a Sports Award Dinner for KS4 + 5 outdoor pursuits week, canoeing down the Ardeche Gorge, skiing trips and trips to national sporting events.
