Curriculum

All pupils at Barnwell study French from Year 7, and German is introduced as a second foreign language from Year 8. Pupils have the opportunity to study one or both languages to GCSE, AS and A-Level. Some Italian is taught in Key Stages 4 and 5.

We use interactive, communicative teaching methods, enabling students to gain expertise in the foreign language and insight into continental culture through language games, work with authentic materials, direct contact with native speakers and the use of ICT, as well as more traditional teaching of grammar and vocabulary.

In addition, we are joined each year by two language assistants who provide opportunities for students to improve their speaking skills and who coach pupils in preparation for exams.

The department is well-equipped with its own ICT suite, multi-media computers and interactive whiteboards in most classrooms.

Trips and Exchanges

Each year we offer a full range of visits and exchanges as follows:

  • Year 7 - Day Trip to Montreuil-sur-mer in France
  • Year 8 - 6-Day Study Visit to Speyer, Germany
