Recent Humanities Department Collaboration

At the end of the summer term the Humanities department erupted with the sights and sounds of Calcutta, as the Year 7 students took part in a cross curricular theme day, involving Geography, History and RE.

The topic was Calcutta and the students brought together work from all three subjects to produce some excellent Calcutta ‘check outs’. Numerous aspects of Calcutta were explored including: trade, the Black Hole of Calcutta, the work of Mother Teresa, street children, dump pickers, monsoon and flooding, rickshaws, the slums of Calcutta, sport, the British Empire and Calcutta, IT and business, Clive of India and his links with Calcutta, temples and sites of pilgrimage, including the famous ‘rat temple’ of Calcutta and much, much more.

It was frenetic at times, messy and full of energy – a bit like Calcutta itself. The atmosphere in the department was superb for the whole day and the students worked extremely hard and were a credit to themselves and the school. As well as producing their ‘check outs’ the students also considered the probable, possible and preferred futures of Calcutta and wrote six word stories inspired by what they found out. It was an excellent, if a little tiring, experience for all involved.
