English
English is the subject which underpins the whole school curriculum and the department is aware of its responsibility to develop pupils' ability to use language effectively, in all its forms. All pupils are given the opportunity to maximise their potential in speaking and listening, reading, writing and in using their imagination through a rich experience of literature.
The English department works closely with the SEN departments, the two specific learning bases on site and the library, in order to support pupils' achievements at Key Stage 3. All students follow the GCSE syllabus (AQA) at key stage 4 in both English and English Language. At AS/A level, English Literature is offered to sixth-form students.
Extra-curricular activities are a valuable extension to the work in this subject and a varied programme of competitions, writing for a local newspaper, debating, theatre visits and school magazine writing/editing are on offer each year.
