Citizenship

"It is our aim to guide pupils through the maze of potential personal and social situations, so that they are able to formulate and develop their own opinions. This, we believe, will enable our pupils to maximise their full potential in a modern society. This is a life long process of learning, refining and making sense of ourselves as individuals, our relationships with others and the society in which we live."

Citizenship is fundamental to the social and academic development of our pupils. This subject covers a wide range of topics from friendship, bullying and playsafe in Year 7 through to sexual relationships and moral issues in Year 11. Students are guided to life skills so that they can apply them to any situation in which they find themselves. This is achieved through role-play and an interactive approach to lessons. Best of all it is FUN.

Citizenship at Barnwell School helps students to find out about the things they need to know, understand and be able to do to play an effective role in the community at local, national and international levels. Students learn and reflect about:

  • how legal and human rights relate to citizens;
  • the origins and implications of the diverse national, regional, religious and ethnic identities in the UK and the need for mutual respect and understanding;
  • the work of parliament, government and the courts;
  • the opportunities for individuals and voluntary groups to bring about change;
  • the importance of a free press and the role of the media;
  • how the economy functions, including the rights and responsibilities of consumers, employers and employees;
  • the UK's relations within Europe and with the Commonwealth and the United Nations, and the wider issues of global interdependence and responsibility, including sustainable development.

Students also develop skills of enquiry and critical thinking; discussion and debate; negotiation and accommodation; participation in school and community based activities.
