What are the learning outcomes from enterprise education?
The main learning outcomes identified included the following, grouped for ease of reference:
1. Attitudes/attributes/qualities/dispositions:
- self-esteem, self-confidence, self-respect, self-awareness/ability to self- evaluate, self-discovery, realistic view of self;
- enthusiastic, willing to seek opportunities, take risks, learn from failure;
- a ‘can-do’ attitude, empowerment – belief it is possible to improve/raise level of achievement;
- flexible, creative, innovative, effective, competitive;
- pride in doing things.
2. Knowledge/concepts:
- processes for achieving results (making a product, providing a service);
- project planning tools;
- economic and business understanding, business operations - how different enterprises work;
- finance/financial services and how to use them;
- the legal framework;
- moral issues.
3. Skills:
- key skills – wider skills such as teamwork, problem solving, negotiation, presentational, analytical, evaluation skills;
- personal finance skills;
- 'learning to learn' skills;
- personal effectiveness skills;
- planning.
4. Other outcomes:
- enterprising people, not just entrepreneurs;
- acknowledgement of achievement, improved GCSE grades, awards;
- longer-term economic well-being, productivity;
- business start-ups;
- school improvement;
- contributions to society;
- fun.
