Enterprise Week November 2007
National Enterprise Week at Barnwell School : 12th-16th November 2007
What is Enterprise?
Having an idea and making it happen !
Enterprise week at Barnwell School was packed with exciting events for everyone to take part in. Previous to this, every student had attended an Enterprise assembly. During this time the students were given the programme for the following week.
Riding the Waves—logo competition
A friend of the school, Simon Prior, who has planned to row his way across the
Indian Ocean single handed, has asked Barnwell students to design the logo for this event. Students spent both Monday and Tuesday’s Form time designing logos, taking part in an Enterprise word search and playing “spot the correct logo”. They also had discussions about Enterprise ; what it is, how it can be used at school and the workplace and how enterprising Barnwell students are.
Update: Mr Prior chose the logos of Tara Smith, Laura Saxon and Matthew Cooper. They have one more week to work on their ideas then a winner will be chosen. Good luck!
Enterprise Word Search: Winner: Karl Shaw
Spot the Correct Logo: No correct entries were received for this competition however, Ellen Pearson designed a fantastic enterprise logo, so the prize has been awarded to her for her enterprising idea.
iPod Initiative
Monday also saw the launch of the Barnwell M-learning initiative.
12 Geography students have been issued with iPods that are to be used in a variety of ways such as downloading classroom activities, helping Extended Learning and aiding revision. The initiative is a trial that is planned to last until July 2007. If it proves successful, Barnwell school will be looking to offer it to other students.
Enterprising Parents Get Business Advice
A joint venture between Barnwell School and Business Link, a local advisory service, saw a workshop being run in the Community Room on the East Campus for enterprising parents. We invited any parent who has ever thought about starting their own business to come and get free advice from a Business Link representative. We may be looking at running this event again at a later date. If you are interested in starting your own business or already have your own business and would like some advice and would be interested in coming along to one of these free informal workshops please contact Ms Coyte at Barnwell School on 01438 222500.
Wednesday & Thursday’s Business Challenge heats up
Barnwell Inter-House Business Challenge
Round 1
All students were asked to think up an idea of an event that could take place in school. They completed a business plan and the best three ideas were to be chosen by the Heads of Houses to go through to the next round.
Round 2
During an extended registration, students worked in their houses on the three chosen ideas. With a more in-depth business plan to complete, the students worked hard and handed them back in to be judged. One team from each house was then chosen to go into the grand final on Friday.
Post-16 students get business advice from IBM hosts.
Five students were lucky enough to take part in an IBM Assessment Day hosted jointly by the Chamber of Commerce and IBM at the Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre. Making good use of the opportunity to work with people from the business world; students were split into teams with students across the town and had to complete team building activities used by the company to assess graduates looking to join them. IBM staff constantly assessed the students and gave them feedback with tips and advice on how to impress at interview. Thank you to John Watson, Rob Day, Lewis Clarke, Samantha Falconer and Danielle Moorleyfor taking part.
Natwest Tender Challenge goes townwide
Barnwell again played host to the towns Natwest Tender Challenge. Teams of Year 9 students from six different schools competed for the tender of the Stevenage Borough Football Club’s Christmas dinner. Each team had to plan the menu, book accommodation and entertainment and also complete a finance sheet. At the end of the day each team presented to a panel of 3 independent judges from Natwest and the Chamber of Commerce. After a difficult deliberation the winners were
Heathcote School with Barnwell a close second with only 1 point between them. A big Well Done! to the Barnwell team: Ashleigh Skipp, Anil Patel, Nick Flood, Emma Draper and Thomas Weynberg.
Future Homes targeted by Barnwell Students
Thursday saw post-16 students working on a planning consultation for future home owners.
The annual Stevenage Planning Day event held in conjunction with Stevenage Borough Council and Setpoint Stevenage saw teams of students from across the town research, prepare and present arguments, for planners, developers, local residents and environmental groups that would have an interest in the consultation process for a prospective housing development.

Friday’s Final Round Up
Barnwell Inter-House Business Challenge — Round 3
The teams from each house had only periods 1 and 2 on Friday to put together a business plan and presentation for their chosen event, before “selling” their ideas to the whole of Year 7 and a panel of judges. The presentations were all to a very high standard and included ideas such as Recycled Fashion Show, Barnwell’s Got Talent, Car Wash for staff cars, Music Festival, Gala Dinner, Talent Show and a school Vegetable Patch.
The panel of judges, which included Stevenage Borough Council’s Elaine Simpson, local business - man Andy Prior, Owen Davies from the Chamber of Commerce and Barnwell School’s Mr Roberts and Ms Coyte, Business and Enterprise Coordinator, had a tough decision to make but after careful consideration and much deliberation the Gala Dinner came out the winner. The students have won the opportunity to make their Gala Dinner a reality.
Congratulations to Nicola Erne, Rebecca Aylott, Usilla Thompson and Lauren Cardines.
Kadoma Link
Year 7 students Charlie Reeves and Molly Finch showed a short presentation about Barnwell School to The Mayor of Stevenage and MP Barbara Follett alongside other schools taking part in the link. Well done girls
