Enterprise Days

Hello and welcome to enterprise education at Barnwell School.  Every student has an entitlement to enterprise education through the curriculum.  Lots of people don’t realise that their lessons are enterprising!

Pupils that are involved today are being enterprising.  Most people think that enterprise is linked to making money.  Even though there is an element of financial awareness it is not all about money.  In fact every day you will be enterprising without knowing it.  Team work, communication, planning work all involve enterprise elements.

How many times have you had an idea that takes your work in a different direction?  In fact how many times have you had an idea?

Now you know a little more about enterprise, this is good!  Knowing about it is half the challenge for us as a school.  Trying to develop enterprise opportunities is why we have days like this.  Have a look around, everyone is engaged in collaborative work.  All aspects of today’s event involve you developing your enterprise skills.

Tomorrow you will be more aware of the enterprising activities taking place in lessons.  Some of you may wish to take enterprise further.  One way that you can do this is through a certificated course in citizenship.  Many aspects of the course are covered in your normal lessons; it’s just bringing them together.  Everyone in Year 10 from September will do an enterprise element in the spring term.  One activity is to plan an event, similar to this one but on a smaller scale.  Not everyone will be able to run the event but the planning and organising are key elements.

Even if you are not in Year 10 next year, you will be aware of enterprise opportunities.  With the help of Mrs Coyte (Business & Enterprise Co-ordinator) and each department, we are looking to develop enterprise activities in all subjects.  It is something that all schools in England and Wales are working towards.

There are lots of different ideas that teachers have come up with so far which are very exciting.

How many of you have heard of the Trial of Che Che Rodrigez?

A series of geography lessons at Key Stage 4 work through a case involving many techniques.  Problem solving, discussion, team work, research all figure in the project.  Each person in the class has a role and must work together to construct an argument for or against the sentencing of Che Che.  Lots of students and staff have been involved in this project and it is on that sticks in their minds forever.

Interestingly, many students have commented that they go on to use the skills developed in other subjects.

Now it is your turn to solve a problem. Knowing who murdered Mr Westergreen-Thorne is your task.  It is the first time an enterprise event of this scale has been attempted at Barnwell School.  Students on both campuses are attempting to solve the case.

Over the course of today, all students will have participated in 5 activities with a view to point the finger of suspicion at one Assistant Headteacher.  Utilising your enterprise skills, you should be able to discover the truth.  Together, you and your fellow students will help justice to take its course.  Together, using your enterprise tools, you will help send the guilty party away.

Our society needs enterprising citizens and you are the future.  Get the most from today.  Enjoy yourself, but also reflect on the skills that you have used and developed throughout the day.

Though this article has been written to open your eyes to enterprise education, it should have provided you with a clue to the murderer!  May I wish you luck on your quest and be sure to convict the right person!

Enjoy!
