B&E Update May 2011
G&T creative writing day
5 G&T year 10 students spent the day at the University of Hertfordshire working with an English lecturer on enhancing their creative writing skills. They had a great day working with students from other schools.
Business and Enterprise annual conference
Julie Coyte and Cheryl Wilson attended the 2 day conference in Oxfordshire, they attended a host of workshops run by other B&E schools and enterprise providers. They both came back to school with a range of new ideas and are working on implementing some of them at Barnwell School so watch this space.
Hertfordshire Business Challenge
Barnwell School entered a team in this challenge at Watford Football Groud against other Hertfordshire schools, the theme was the Olympics and the students had to work in teams to invent a new mode of transport for the games. Our students worked really hard and did a very impressive presentation on the ‘Travelling Javelling’. Unfortunately they did not win however they learnt a lot from the day and were very impressed with the winning school. Well done to Elizabeth Beake, Abigail McKenna, Jordan Slessor, Mollie Holland, Katie Bond, Sam MacKenzie, Casey Barratt.
6th form Natwest finance
June Wilkinson from Natwest came in to speak with our 6th form students about budgeting for University.
Student receptionist
The year 8 students continue to work on reception for one day a term, they are chosen by their Heads of House using the mad scores. At the beginning of each term the students attend a training session with Ms Coyte where they go through the expectations for this work experience. The students work through an Enterprise skills workbook, an enterprise word search and entrepreneur quiz.
Year 8 boys mentoring visit
The year 8 boys taking part in the mentoring with the students from the University of Hertfordshire have had their visit to the University. They were shown around both campuses and were very impressed with the University facilities; they were treated to a mini lecture and even went in the new night club.
National Standard for Enterprise Education
Our assessment was done on 7th April, the assessor was in school for a full day, meeting with staff and students, he had a tour around each campus with our student ambassadors and met with the Head teacher, Deputy Head responsible for the B&E, the faculty representatives and the extended schools coordinator. The report has been sent to the school and I am very pleased to confirm that the assessor has strongly recommended us for this award.

SUMMARY – outstanding features |
· the employment of an experienced enterprise coordinator · the introduction of a cross college departmental action group aiming to develop enterprise activity within traditional curriculum areas · the wide range of enterprise activities and events provided for students over the years · a clear definition of the enterprise skills students are expected to work towards gaining · its close contact with and support for the local community |
B&E faculty reps
This group of staff representatives have met a few times now and have been a great help in getting the B&E skills posters up in all teaching spaces, something that was mentioned by the assessor as a positive move. They are now going to be looking at a way of recording Enterprise across the school.
