ICTea Staff Workshop

As a school we see ICT as fundamental to the achievement of our students. This is reflected in our vision where you will see Achievement is at the top of the vision logo.

Achievement is powered through the other key elements displayed in the logo.

Barnwell regularly reviews its progress in ICT and has produced a Strategy for Change ICT document.

Geography & ICT

The Role of ICT in Geography Lessons

The creative use of ICT is a feature of the Geography Department at Barnwell School . Staff endeavour to use a variety of applications to engage students and enhance their learning. In the near future, examples of students work will be posted on this page to show how highly we value student’s creative efforts. In the meantime , we’ll try to give you a flavour of what we do by describing an ICT highlight of the month.

June 2008

A class of Year 9 students have just completed the ‘Ben and Jerry 30 second Challenge.’ If you’ve seen the 2007 or 2008 Ben and Jerry adverts, you’ll know just how much information they squeeze into 30 seconds!

This activity involved students working collaboratively in groups to produce a 30 second commercial using Windows Moviemaker and Audacity to create an information film about sources of energy.

Students had to select appropriate images and write a very concise script which they then recorded as individual sound files. The images and sound files were then carefully sequenced along the Moviemaker timeline.

The results were excellent and students were amazed at how much information could be squeezed into such a short time span.

May 2008

Some may say that "the ability to learn is more important than the ability to teach". However, there are times when I believe this cannot be the case. When learning a brand new ICT skill it could be argued to be one of those times.

Charlotte in Year 8 produced an outstanding piece of work which I could only marvel at and which I had no idea how to recreate. She’d used some free cartoon characters called Sprites and the programme Paint to produce an ingenious cartoon strip.

Through an email dialogue, using the school email system, she helped me to understand how to construct a piece of work using Sprites. She even offered to give up some time and help me at break or after school. I emailed Charlotte to ask her if she would take the lesson and teach her classmates how to create work with Sprites and Paint – her reply was ‘yes, please!’

Charlotte demonstrated the process on the whiteboard and then spent the lesson circulating amongst her peers helping them – I don’t think she could believe how many times she was asked for help by her classmates and ….me!

Mobile Technology

With 95% of teenagers owning some sort of powerful handheld device, more and more schools are looking at how these technologies can aid teaching and learning. Barnwell teachers Miss Hart and Mr Roberts presented a workshop at County looking at Barnwell School’s innovative use of iPods together with video and podcasting.
